This removes polymerized residues that form from heat exposure. Always follow the MSDS and the manufacturer’s cleaning-agent recommendations to avoid seal damage.

Use only fluids specified by the machine OEM—typically high-purity, low-odor mineral or synthetic oil designed for theatrical fogging. Avoid improvised oils (vegetable, lamp, engine) that contain contaminants or additives that polymerize or clog nozzles. Check the fluid’s product data sheet for viscosity and flash-point; choose a grade that matches the pump and heater specifications. If the manual cites a viscosity range or ISO specification, match within that range to avoid pump cavitation or heater overload.

Corrosion is driven by contaminants, moisture, and acidic byproducts from degraded fluids. Prevent it by: using high-quality, low-contaminant oil; maintaining a dry storage environment (relative humidity <50% when possible); employing periodic short runs to evaporate residues from internal surfaces after use; and inspecting visible metalwork quarterly. For equipment in coastal or high-humidity venues add corrosion inspections every 3–6 months. If corrosion is detected, replace affected components and remove deposits with manufacturer-approved solvents—do not use improvised acids or abrasives which can thin heating elements.

Balance mechanical cleaning with chemical compatibility. Inspect seals and gaskets at least every 6 months for small- to medium-use machines and every 3 months for heavy-use rigs; replace at first sign of hardening, cracking, or seepage. Use only recommended cleaning solvents for o-rings and elastomers—many common solvents swell or dissolve nitrile/silicone compounds. For routine cleaning, perform gentle flushes and nozzle brushes; reserve aggressive solvent immersion for bench service following OEM guidance to avoid seal degradation.

Intermittent operation accelerates varnish formation and pump stagnation. When oil sits in a hot chamber or pump for long idle periods it can oxidize and form gels that impede flow. For machines with sporadic use: (1) implement a short weekly purge cycle to circulate fresh fluid, (2) drain and cap reservoirs for long storage, and (3) store units indoors in climate-controlled spaces. Document idle hours and schedule a functional check (pump flow, heater draw, nozzle spray pattern) before every production after long downtime.

Establish baseline metrics and test against them. Measure pump flow by collecting output into a graduated cylinder over a timed interval and record ml/min at standard pump speed; repeat monthly for active units. Record heater current draw with a clamp meter—an increase can indicate fouling. Check nozzle spray pattern visually and with a particle or droplet assessment when required. Re-calibrate pump drive settings per OEM procedure if flow deviates beyond tolerance (typically ±10%). Maintain a log of readings, service actions, and fluid batches to correlate performance changes with maintenance and consumable quality.
